What Are STDs? Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections spread primarily through sexual intercourse. Common examples include Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes 1, and Syphilis. Risk Factors You are at a higher risk of contracting STDs if you: Have sex with someone who has had several partners Don't use a condom Share needles Trade sex for drugs or money Have multiple sex partners STDs can be transmitted through oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse. Some, like HIV, cannot be cured, making testing crucial. Why Get Tested? Contrary to popular belief, many STDs show no symptoms. This means you could be infected without knowing it. Regular testing is essential for maintaining your health and preventing the spread of STDs. Common STDs 1. Chlamydia Symptoms in Men: Burning during urination, testicular swelling and pain, discharge from the penis. Symptoms in Women: Abnormal vaginal discharge, burning during urination. Testing: A swab of urine or the genital area. Inform your doctor if you've had anal or oral sex for accurate testing. 2. Gonorrhea Symptoms in Men: Swollen testicles, burning or painful urination, discharge. Symptoms in Women: Bleeding between periods, burning or painful urination, increased vaginal discharge. Testing: A swab of urine or the genital area. Similar to chlamydia, inform your doctor of all sexual activities. 3. HIV Early Symptoms: Fatigue, headaches, fever, sore throat, thrush, muscle and joint pain, rash, ulcers, diarrhea, night sweats. Testing: A swab inside the mouth or a blood test. Confidential and anonymous testing is available. 4. Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2) Symptoms in Men: Sores on the penis, buttocks, thighs, or scrotum; discharge; swollen lymph nodes; painful urination. Symptoms in Women: Sores on the labia, vagina entrance, inner lips, buttocks, thighs, clitoris, or anus; watery discharge. Testing: Blood test (type-specific IgG) or a swab from the affected area. 5. Syphilis Symptoms: Small, painless ulcers on the mouth, genitals, or anus. Testing: Blood test or a sample from the ulcer. 6. Trichomoniasis Symptoms in Women: Pain during intercourse, strong odor, frothy discharge, irritation, itching. Symptoms in Men: Often asymptomatic.
